Depeche Mode's career can be evenly broken into three phases: Pre-Alan Wilder, Alan Wilder, and Post-Alan Wilder. This album bridges the first two phases; Alan had officially joined the group during this time period but the other three members didn't really start using him until Construction Time Again. Having said that, it has some great moments that are atypical from the Depeche Mode most fans know and love. Highlights include "Leave in Silence", "The Sun and the Rainfall", and "See You". "Nothing to Fear" is also an amazing instrumental piece.
