The Good Son vine dupa două albume mai intunecate , Your Funeral ... My Trial (1986) si Tender Prey (1988) si reprezinta o usoara evadare a lui Cave spre un sunet mai aerisit, schimbarea stării de spirit fiind data de faptul ca Nick Cave se indragostise de jurnalista braziliană Viviane Carneiro. Ulterior, Cave a marturisit : "Cred că The good son este un fel de reflectie a modului in care m-am simtit in Brazilia. Am fost destul de fericit acolo. Eram indrăgostit si primul an a fost bun." "On “The Good Son” Cave incorporates more uplifting religious influences: we have Brazilian protestant religious anthem (“Foi Na Cruz”), African traditional song (“The Good Son”) or American Gospel (“The Witness Song”). Cave’s voice is particularly strong and dominates the record marked by the constant presence of piano, Hammond organ and soft string orchestrations (“Foi Na Cruz”, “The Good Son”, “Sorrow’s Child”, “The Ship Song”, “Lament”, “Lucy”), whereas stronger guitar accents are rare (these are to be found only on three tracks: “The Good Son”, “The Hammer Song” and “The Witness Song”)."Coperta prezinta o indoitura in partea dreapta, desi discul este sigilat.
