Not unlike Nirvana and Nirvana, Stud called themselves Stud without necessarily knowing (or bothering) about the previously extant Stud – the Taste/Blossom Toes offshoot – but we reckon this particular episode can be resolved without litigation, unless the Finnish heavy rock band, Stud, wade into the fray.

The Stud we’re dealing with here were a boisterous trio who came together in Houston, Texas in the early 70s and locally released their sole, self-titled album in 1975 in a delectably parsimonious run of 200 copies. A fine ensemble they were too, particularly guitarist Doktor Timothy Williams – a handy player with a fantastically scummy and livid guitar sound, like a viral culture grown from the dirt on Blue Cheer’s shoes.

Woman Like You suggests what might transpire if you were to bundle the Fun House-era Stooges into The Groundhogs’ Transit van. Then again, the good-timey, LCD rock of Captain Boogie (“I’m Captain Boogie, and I can boogie for you” – a selfless gesture) implies a kinship with the gormlessly endearing Grand Funk. However, it’s the curveballs that make all the difference, not least the unexpectedly mellifluous soft rock of The War Song, with its wonderfully over-emphatic lyrics: “Have you heard the news about the war? Ah said, fighting and casualties galore…”
